I can’t replace my UHD BD player with the PS5 not just because of the ho-hum playback quality but also because of the lack of Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos content support. I can’t stream files from my music server to the PS5 so I can listen to them while playing a game. I can’t enjoy VRR with PS5 games on my new LG CX OLED TV. Sony can improve many aspects of the PS5’s operation - such as HDMI VRR - but it is taking its time with the necessary updates… which might prove problematic at some point. But with a new CoD, a new DiRT, a new Assassin’s, even some surprises like The Pathless, I always had something that I really wanted to play at any given time from the end of October to this day.

Add a couple more days for the free Astro’s Playroom to that and an extra week to see what Insomniac did with the remake of the original Spider-man. As a gamer I felt that I really was spoilt for choice with the PS5: Demon’s Souls, Spider-man Miles Morales and Sackboy (man was I wrong to underestimate that one) would have sufficed for the first 5 to 6 weeks or so even if there were no third-party games to play.

Sony and Microsoft were not kidding when they argued that with their new systems they expect to see more user engagement based on their systems’ operating speed alone. So much so that it really does change the way a gamer uses it. It’s one thing to write about it as part of the overall reporting on a new system, it’s quite another to live it day in and day out for months: the PS5 is very, very fast in operation. Here they are, into the context that 75 days of use can offer. Well, yes, they were - five of them, in fact. Were there any such things in the case of the PS5? When reviewing a consumer product of this kind it’s not unusual to find out or appreciate in a different way things that take some time to become apparent.
